89 beaches in Catalonia have obtained the Blue Flag label in 2014, achieving international recognition. The Blue Flag label certifies the quality and services offered by the beach. By areas, Girona has received 28 flags, Barcelona 23 and Tarragona 38.
This award values and rewards the environmental management, safety and facilities of the beaches. It also considers the quality of the services given, the environmental education program and, above all, the excellent quality of seawater. The Blue Flag label is given by the l’Associació d’Educació Ambiental i del Consumidor in collaboration with the Generalitat Government.
Barcelona has 4.5 Km of beaches, starting at the beach of Sant Sebastià and ending at Llevant. All of them have the blue flag and are certified to ISO 14001, the standard for environmental management systems (EMS). Furthermore, the Nova Icària beach has the Ecobeach flag as an acknowledgement to its quality and services. This beach is located in the quarter of Sant Martí which you can visit with the Smart City Tour, a tour which explains Barcelona’s commitment to sustainability. The tour is part of our sustainability program and Biosphere certificate.
Several activities take place in the beaches during the whole summer, organized by the city hall and designed for both kids and grown-ups. There are also several facilities such as volleyball nets, soccer goals, ping-pong tables and playground equipment for children.
All along the coastline you will find “Chiringuitos”, beach bars placed right on the beach sand which serve brunches and refreshing drinks. Chiringuitos are open all day long: during the day they are restaurants where you can have a light salad or paella, and in the evening they convert into a chill-out bar with all kinds of music. Beach Bars have created the Beach Lifestyle where, laying in a hammock with a tropical fruit cocktail, you can travel to a beach paradise while still being right next to the hectic city of Barcelona.
